God's Son and Eternity?

Q: In your post, End of World/Second Coming, you said some things I have never thought of before.  One is your comment about the world always ending as social structure changes.  The other was what you said about Jesus' comments about the "second coming."  Do you believe that Jesus was the Son of God?  What about all unbelievers perishing in hell as in John 3:16, and believers in Him having everlasting life? L.C.

A: I am glad that you are thinking in new ways.

Briefly, the Bible identifies God with three nouns:  God is Light; God is Love; God is a spirit.*  I believe that Jesus expressed Love, Light and Spirit.  Without Love, Light and Spirit we perish.  With Love, Light and Spirit we have everlasting life.

The word "perish" in the Bible means to be destroyed.  An eternity burning in hell is not destruction.

John 3:17 says that God sent his Son not to condemn the world, "but that the world through him might be saved."  This indicates that there is salvation for the world, rather than condemnation (which results when most of the population is consigned to an eternity in hell).  God is "not willing that any should perish."**  I fully believe that God's will shall prevail.

What about the role of our own belief?  When Love, Light, and Spirit combine in us, we believe.

Again I refer you to my book Wings of Comfort, which elaborates all these themes and many more, especially for those who are seeking to grow from fundamentalist Christian roots.

*I John 1:5, 4:8; John 4:24, KJV.  **II Peter 3:9.
